Ronda

Wander the World Joyfully

Ronda

December 6, (travelling day)

Day 56
We made it to a couple of the “White Villages” in the mountains of the Sierra in Southern Spain.

There are lots of White Villages tucked into mountainsides.

From Catalina Island to Mexico to Central America to Portugal, this is the way people tuck into the hills.  We wondered about the reason for white houses, and assume it has something to do with protecting from the heat in summer.
Ronda is the place of high stone bridges and a Moorish King’s house.
We tentatively peeked over the edge.

I asked Tony if he wanted to sit at

one of those tables.
He did not.
We found the purported first bullring in Spain.
The purported largest teddy bear.
And a great meal.

Sautéed artichokes and Iberian ham for me, shrimp pasta for Tony.  Restaurant Casa Maria.  Right on the main street near the impossibly high bridge.

We walked that off by touring the old city, which is the Moorish quarter.
These Guys.  This is where a tour would come in handy.  The tour guide would explain the expressions on the faces of the statues over the door.  Right now, Tony and I could only make our own assumptions.
Hopefully you can zoom in on the faces and post your assumtion!
This is the King’s Palace.  The Moorish King who purportedly drove Spain crazy enough to drive all the Moors out.
There is also a museum, but most of it is under reconstruction.

Like some houses we’ve found, it needs some work.

There is a rich crossroads of religions here.  I wonder what it’s like to live here.  I wonder if Hanukkah will light up the streets next week?
Tony found a buddy hanging out after school.
And we headed out of town for a different, less threatening view of Ronda.
You can see the old city wall still preserved on the right.
Then we headed off down the road to Zahara de la Sierra.

darn I couldn't see the faces, because pixel too low. But I did notice the 2 statues On opposite ends holding their junk! Must have been a threatening posing session. Did you hear of the new discovery of the carving with the fellow clearly holding his piece as leopards come at him on both sides? foder for late night shows! I'm so glad you are sharing as you go because you couldn't possibly get all this out in such great detail once you get back. There's just too much fabulous stuff.
